10 Firefox extensions you can’t go without

posted at 11.01am

With so many extensions and add-ons for Firefox floating around right now (there are over 500 just on the official Update site), it’s difficult to know which ones you need and which ones would help you little. Here we have ten extensions that should give you a head start in picking what to download first. Obviously, some will be irrelevent to you, while others that you find imperative will be useless to others.

They’re sort of in order from best to not-as-best, but take that with a pinch of salt.

AdBlock 0.5.2.039 | get it
Filters ads from websites by custom rules you have set up or downloaded. Set up one rule for Google adverts, and they’re gone from the whole web. The end for advertising (I wish, but it’s pretty useful).

StumbleUpon 2.02 | get it
I’ve mentioned this before, and I use it pretty constantly when I’m bored. Enables you to set your interests on their website, and sends you to websites that have been recommended by users with similar tastes.

ForecastFox 0.8.1.1 | get it
Weather updates in your status bar for today, tonight, and the next two days. Also includes the latest satellite image, and is NOT just US only, as it works perfectly for me in the UK.

GMail Notifier 0.4.3 | get it
Allows you to ditch the official notifier, and rely on this Firefox extension to be informed when you recieve an email. Also gives one-click access to your GMail Inbox.

Aardvark 1.0 | get it
An odd one - allows you to erase, widen, change the colour and all sorts of any element on a web page. Useful for when you want to have control over how a printed web page will look.

GreaseMonkey

An amazing extension, which allows you to install user-made scripts to modify parts of websites across the Internet. For example, there are scripts which add the much-lacked ‘delete’ button to Gmail, or add a ‘Next item’ link when browsing eBay search results.

FireFTP 0.88.3 | get it
A full featured FTP client for your browser that expands on the included software. Very useful if you want to upload a few files to a server without having to leave your Firefox window.

WebDeveloper 0.9.3 | get it
On-the-fly editing of any web site - for example, you can edit the CSS of a website to increase the font size, or test out styles for your own site without opening up an editor.

FlashGot 0.5.9.7 | get it
Download web pages, whole web sites or just a few images with one click. Also integrates several download managers into Firefox.

ChatZilla 0.9.68.5 | get it
An easy to use IRC client for Firefox.
